What's all the hubbub

And now the CBS banned Maxfli ad starring pro golf's perennial bad boy John Daly. I can't quite figure what all the hubbub is about. The depiction of the happy-go-lucky player, singer and renown party animal seems quite at home in this contrived "party all the time" lifestyle. And I'm certain, based on personal experience, the ad resonates well with the occasional out-of-town resort golf foursome. The controversial rolling beer grab just seems like more of the same. It doesn't appear more harmful than most Country Western music videos. But then again this is CBS.

With the Don Imus and Rosie O'Donnell debacles freshly ground into our minds, I suppose they just can't be too careful. Maybe this is the opportune platform CBS execs need to demonstrate their high-minded network policy regarding the consumption of alcohol and hazardous activity. Maybe they believe this will send the message that this mainstream media is indeed responsible. On the other hand, USA Today reports that our buddy John has been in rehab for alcohol abuse twice before he turned 30. Judge for yourself.

Well.....the legend of John Daly continues. His image drives his marketability, which appears to be pretty darn good. So the censors can continue to attempt to place controls over consumer behavior, but in the end, we decide. Pitchers of beer on the golf course doesn't seem so bad, does it?
The thing is, we just live in this environment where censorship is out of control. Somehow a bunch of really sanctimonious people have hijacked certain elements of the media and the government and are determined to make life as boring as possible. That said, JD doesn't seem to give a rat's behind.
I am hoping it is banned because the man sings bad. OUCH. Stick to golf, John.
The move by CBS was really absurd. Daly has had problems with abusing alcohol in the past. These could be attributed to emotional and mental health problems and the desire to self medicate. He has apparently gotten the majority of the demons that were troubling him in line (though his game is not) so it is obviously not a great danger for him to have a few beers. This is not at all uncommon out in Hollywood and amongst sports celebrities who early on as young and immature individuals overcome by the glare of the spotlight and circumstance in general lose control, only to mature with age and leave behind the addiction/substance abuse issues they were noted for, despite an occasional drink. The modern day know it all temperance types will always be around and catered too when they get the ear of people such as Sean McManus.
Sean McManus, CBS president and son of sports legend Jim Mckay, needs to lighten up a bit. That is unless he views this as an easy way to practice some CBS-style political correctness. How much of a fuss will he get from Maxfli after all. I'm not sure they aren't reaping more PR mileage out of the "banning" controversy anyway. Perhaps everyone gains the thrill of victory and none suffer the agony of defeat!
