Sergio's belly putter revival

Sergio.jpgLike him or not, Sergio's stellar performance at the British Open means a resurgence of interest in the much maligned belly putter. El Nino's dominance in the first three rounds of the Open can definitely be traced to a marked improvement in his putting. Here's a player with tee to green talent that rivals the best in the game, but in the end, the money stick is what separates the good from the great. The crushing moment that he missed the putt to win on the 18th will no doubt haunt him in the wee hours when our specters and demons are always larger that life.

And the golf retailers will now revel in the newfound profits generated by interest in the long putter. Somehow Sergio made it a little more OK for a young golfer to switch to a belly putter. Go figure.

The belly putters also come in handy if you are playing in a tournament with the inside the leather for putts...

Good point Scot. Those using the "inside the leather" rule would get a little extra assistance from the extra-long putters. And since most belly putter users tend to be yippish over the three footers, they'll most likely welcome all the help they can get.

The TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Company is offering 500 TaylorMade® Rossa® Corzina belly putters built to the same specifications as the putter that Sergio Garcia used at the 2007 Open Championship. Check it out here.
